  6.                           STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES

  8.    We, the members of the Libertarian Party, challenge the cult of the
  9.    omnipotent state and defend the rights of the individual.
  10.    
  11.    We hold that all individuals have the right to exercise sole dominion
  12.    over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner
  13.    they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal
  14.    right of others to live in whatever manner they choose.
  15.    
  16.    Governments throughout history have regularly operated on the opposite
  17.    principle, that the State has the right to dispose of the lives of
  18.    individuals and the fruits of their labor. Even within the United
  19.    States, all political parties other than our own grant to government
  20.    the right to regulate the lives of individuals and seize the fruits of
  21.    their labor without their consent.

  23.    We, on the contrary, deny the right of any government to do these
  24.    things, and hold that where governments exist, they must not violate
  25.    the rights of any individual: namely, (1) the right to life --
  26.    accordingly we support the prohibition of the initiation of physical
  27.    force against others; (2) the right to liberty of speech and action --
  28.    accordingly we oppose all attempts by government to abridge the
  29.    freedom of speech and press, as well as government censorship in any
  30.    form; and (3) the right to property -- accordingly we oppose all
  31.    government interference with private property, such as confiscation,
  32.    nationalization, and eminent domain, and support the prohibition of
  33.    robbery, trespass, fraud, and misrepresentation.

  35.    Since governments, when instituted, must not violate individual
  36.    rights, we oppose all interference by government in the areas of
  37.    voluntary and contractual relations among individuals. People should
  38.    not be forced to sacrifice their lives and property for the benefit of
  39.    others. They should be left free by government to deal with one
  40.    another as free traders; and the resultant economic system, the only
  41.    one compatible with the protection of individual rights, is the free
  42.    market.
